Yesterday afternoon saw us bounce back from two straight defeats in the league, with a 1 – 0 hard fought victory over Bridon Ropes in the FA Vase.

From Wednesdays defeat to Crowborough, we were without injured Harry Ottaway and Jos also Jake Britnell was missing from the squad, in came Patrick Campbell and Chan Quan into midfield, James Fray came in and played wide left meaning Jamie Humphris was pushed into the centre.

The enforced changes to the side looked to have an effect on our play as we didn’t look at the races to begin with and our short sharp passing games from Wednesday had gone missing. On the other hand Bridon had come out the blocks well and were moving the ball around but to no real threat.

The story of the first half was both of the goalkeepers, the Bridon keeper was put under pressure from Humphris on a high ball, as they both jumped fairly for the ball, on landing it look to most in the crowd that the keeper had dropped the ball into the net…..yet the ref blew late for a free kick. At the other end Sam I’Anson keeping his place in goal from Wednesday pulled off a spectacular top corner save after a excellently hit free kick.

The 2nd half had more of the same feel as the 1st did, Bridon were creating a few chances which I’Anson had to be on his toes to deal with. But we managed to get the break through on 50 minutes, when Humphries found himself with a clear run on goal, Humphris of old you would put your house on to score and thankfully it was Humphris of old as he shaped and placed the ball beyond the keeper.

We never really stamped out authority on the game and allowed Bridon to keep believing they would find a way back into the game. Special mention to the back 5, a clean sheet has been desperately needed in recent weeks and that is what they provided today.

It was pleasing to hear and see a lot of leaders on the pitch in the last 20 minutes of the tie, more of that will lead us to winning more games and continuing our run in the FA Vase this season. The draw for the next round of the FA Vase will be held on Monday 25th September, we will bring you the news as soon as we know it.

But for now, we thank you all for your continued support and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night when we host Cray Valley at the EPA.
