On a dull night at the EPA, we were knocked out of the league cup to a Lydd Town side that kept in the game long enough to punish our mistakes.
Within the first minute Jamie Humphris should have put us one nil up, he raced through and tried to lob the on rushing keeper but unfortunately he couldn’t get enough lift on the shot. 3 minutes later and James Fray put us in front, him and Frankie Warren were linking up well down the right, Fray then beat his man, drove into the box and hit the target, to his joy the keeper parried the ball into the net and not away.
We were looking very lively and creating chances but to no avail. On 19 minutes Lydd were back in the game, a relaxed touch after a back pass fell into the path of the pressuring Lydd striker who nicked the ball and passed into an empty net. This unsettled our rhythm and on 24 minutes Lydd were ahead. A long ball forward was misjudged by Pat Campbell, his header set up Lydd to finish from a close angle inside the box.
The game was level again when a ball across the box found an unmarked Humphris who made his best efforts to miss rather than score from a yard out. Humphris should have put us ahead again in the half, again he was through on goal, this time he tried to take on the on rushing keeper, but he was stopped by a great tackle. Half time 2 – 2.
With 56 minutes gone we were awarded a penalty for a foul on the flying full back Archie Johnson. Humphris stepped up and dispatched the ball into the net without any trouble.
And that’s where our night ended and Lydd won, they found the belief to come back again and drew level before scoring the winning goal with 64 minutes on the clock. We gave it our best shot, bringing on Farrell and Atkins nearly bought us back into the game but Lydd held firm and progressed the the next round.
Now we regroup and get ready for a huge FA Vase game at home to Sawbridgeworth Town from the Essex Senior League on Saturday.
